At this time of year I pretty much go into the woods every day. I want to catch the flowers the moment they appear–I’m not sure why. Maybe my connection with nature is deepened by paying attention to its details and finding the flowers the moment they appear is sort of proof to me of having that relationship. It’s similar, I think, to the pleasure I get in looking through a telescope. Even though there are computerized telescopes where you can just dial in what you want to see and the scope goes to it I think that at least half of the fun of astronomy is in learning the sky and knowing where the things you want to see are and being able to point your scope to them yourself. It’s the same thing for me in the woods. I do love the beauty of the flowers but being able to find them and having a good idea of when they will appear is also very satisfying. Even though today I didn’t expect much to see much difference in the woods from yesterday I didn’t want to take a chance of anything sneaking by me so I dutifully made my rounds. It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it!
